List of Regions/States in Italy Based on Administrative Devisions

The list of administrative divisions of Italy into regions is based on the Constitutional Charter, which came into force in 1948. The current number of 20 was reached in 1963 with the demerger of Abruzzo and Molise into two separate entities. Five regions have special status: Aosta Valley, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sicily and Sardinia. The powers of the region Trentino-Alto Adige are shared between the two autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano. Each region has its own legislative, administrative, regulatory and financial autonomy.
